May 19, 2010. Pittsboro, North Carolina.. Elia Bizzarri makes rocking chairs the old fashioned way, by hand, using tools whose design date back hundreds of years. Working out of a shop in the woods outside Pittsboro, he takes 30 to 45 hours to make each hand crafted chair.. The mallet, right, and frow used to split wood along specific grain lines that enhance the strength of the furniture. Good wood grain is the key to finely crafted chairs as it allows for less wood and lighter chairs.
