July 25, 2008. Durham, NC.. Started over 30 years ago, Beep Ball is baseball for the visually impaired. Played with an oversized softball that beeps, and bases that also make sound, the game has allowed people with varying degrees of visual impairment to participate in a team sport. All players are required to wear blacked out masks, to equalize the impairment and if the fielding team gets control of the ball before the hitting player reaches the base, an out is recorded. If the hitting player reaches the base first, a run is scored. There are only 2 bases, one to the left and one to the right, and the hitting player hears a tone after the hit is made, to add to the difficulty, telling them which base to run to.. A pinch runner points to the let and right bases as he readies himself to run if a hit is made.
