The Cape Fear River at Lock and Dam #1. Lock and Dam #1, located about 30 miles north of the Wilmington and 50 miles south of the Chemours plant, is where the city's intake pipes for their drinking water are.<br />

The Chemours Company, a spin off from DuPont, manufactures many chemicals at its plant in Fayetteville, NC. One of these, commonly referred to as GenX, is part of the process of teflon manufacturing. Chemours has been accused of dumping large quantities of GenX into the Cape Fear River and polluting the water supply of city's down river and allowing GenX to leak into local aquifers.
