The water intake system of the city of Wilmington is located 50 miles downstream from the Chemours plant. The city is the largest city effected by the GenX contamination of the Cape Fear River. <br />

The Chemours Company, a spin off from DuPont, manufactures many chemicals at its plant in Fayetteville, NC. One of these, commonly referred to as GenX, is part of the process of teflon manufacturing. Chemours has been accused of dumping large quantities of GenX into the Cape Fear River and polluting the water supply of city's down river and allowing GenX to leak into local aquifers.
