. The 17th Street Canal levee at the breach. The metal is the part of the levee that was washed away and the Army Corps of Engineers is now trying to rebuild.. The neighborhood known as Lakeview, which borders directly on Lake Pontchartrain, was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and the storm surge which broke the levee on the 17th Street Canal which runs through the neighborhood. 6 months later, little has changed and the area lies mostly abandoned.
