Zero Tolerance School Policies Challenged in NC Supreme Court

Chocowinity, North Carolina..After a fight broke out at Southside High School in Chocowinity, NC in January 2008, a number of students received long term suspensions under the school district's zero-tolerance policy. Several were unable to continue their education and their futures may have been significantly changed by the event. A court case involving 2 of the students that hopes to challenge the policy is about to arrive in the NC Supreme Court. Viktoria King looks over her cheerleading trophies. She was suspended after the fight and is one of the plaintiffs in the court case. She was a star cheerleader before the incident. Her mother found her other opportunities for getting an education as she fought to get her back into the school. Viktoria will graduate from Southside in June and hopes to go to a 4 year college.
