March 2, 2010. Washington, North Carolina..After a fight broke out at Southside High School in Chocowinity, NC in January 2008, a number of students received long term suspensions under the school district's zero-tolerance policy. Several were unable to continue their education and their futures may have been significantly changed by the event. A court case involving 2 of the students that hopes to challenge the policy is about to arrive in the NC Supreme Court. Denise Champion- Harvey is the grandmother of Vernon Mason. She thinks the school policy is too strict and leads kids who are suspended for long periods to fall into lives of aimlessness and does not provide them with the help they need to graduate.
