March 2, 2010. Edward, North Carolina..After a fight broke out at Southside High School in Chocowinity, NC in January 2008, a number of students received long term suspensions under the school district's zero-tolerance policy. Several were unable to continue their education and their futures may have been significantly changed by the event. A court case involving 2 of the students that hopes to challenge the policy is about to arrive in the NC Supreme Court. One of the other students who is involved in the court case, Jessica Hardy, lives in Edward, a much more rural town between Aurora and Chocowinity. The fight was said to revolve around an old rivalry between kids from Aurora and Chocowinity who were consolidated into one high school in the 1990's.
