March 2, 2010. Washington, North Carolina..After a fight broke out at Southside High School in Chocowinity, NC in January 2008, a number of students received long term suspensions under the school district's zero-tolerance policy. Several were unable to continue their education and their futures may have been significantly changed by the event. A court case involving 2 of the students that hopes to challenge the policy is about to arrive in the NC Supreme Court. Vernon Mason (right) is one of the students who received a long term suspension. He has had trouble finding other educational opportunities but is now trying to take GED courses. His mother (left), Tracy Champion sent him from New York thinking he would receive a better education in Washington.
