March 2, 2010. Washington, North Carolina..After a fight broke out at Southside High School in Chocowinity, NC in January 2008, a number of students received long term suspensions under the school district's zero-tolerance policy. Several were unable to continue their education and their futures may have been significantly changed by the event. A court case involving 2 of the students that hopes to challenge the policy is about to arrive in the NC Supreme Court. Vernon Mason (right) is one of the students who received a long term suspension. He has had trouble finding other educational opportunities but is now trying to take GED courses. His mother sent him from New York thinking he would receive a better education in Washington.
